Summary[]
Gear Level represents the general combat strength of a player, as the sum of levels of currently worn equipment (including weapon in hand).
It does not however, show how much damage you actually deal, as Attributes are not affected by the gear level directly and vice versa.
It is also a rough estimate of the progression of a player, but does not display how many and which bosses have been slain. Gear levels limit what bosses you are allowed to track, as a boss that is too many levels above your own are blurred out in the V Blood menu.
Gear levels from equipment also increase the level of a Servant when they are wearing them. Levels both increase the power of a Servant and also give them more 'Hunt proficiency'.
Increasing the Gear Level[]
To increase ones gear level, better armours, jewellery and weapons need to be crafted.
Damage Modification[]
Gear Level modifies both damage dealt to, and damage taken from NPC enemies.
Gear Level has no impact on PvP interactions.
The damage modifier calculations for Gear Level differentials (deltas) are very complicated, as the game uses custom ranges rather than a straightforward formula.
Broadly speaking, if the player is overleveled, they will deal 1% more / take 1% less damage, per Gear Level delta.
If the player is underleveled, they will deal 4% less / take 4% more damage per Gear Level delta.
These generalizations hold less true the larger the Gear Level difference, with the modification becoming lower per level every 10 level deltas.

Stone have a minimum Gear Score requirement before they can be mined. If this threshold is not met, the message "Attack level too low!" will be displayed. Only the Gear Score of the player's weapon is determinant for mining. See the table below.

Trivia[]
The current maximum (permanent) gear level is 91, by wearing Dracula's Shadow Armour Set equivalent gear, a Blood Key equivalent jewelry piece, and holding a Legendary Ancestral Weapon. It could be temporarily increased to 92, by consuming Brute blood of at least 30% blood quality in 1.0. But this is no longer the case.
